Welcome Letter
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome back to the start of what hopes to be a wonderful and successful year.  I am looking forward to meeting and working with all of you.  I look forward to working very diligently to ensure that your child gets the most out of this course. I will be doing my part to deliver the instruction in a most effective manner, as I want success for each of my students.  I know that you have extremely high expectations for your scholar and expect that he/she will do his/her best in language arts class. Please refer to your scholar’s syllabus for further information about the course. They will also be coming home with loads of information regarding classroom procedures and routines. We will talk about the classroom expectations, supply needs, homework policy, makeup work policy, grading policy, and much more. Parents, I encourage you to ask your child to share their classroom procedures and syllabus handouts with you at home.

In eighth grade English language arts we will focus on vocabulary development (figurative language, academic vocabulary, and roots), reading comprehension of informational materials, grade-level texts, and author's claim and purpose.  We will evaluate literary elements of a story, discuss recurring themes and writers' styles and explore structures of literature focusing on different types of poetry.  Students will continue to develop their writing in the areas of organization and focus, research and the use of technology, and evaluation and revision of their work.  We will look at the practice and use of correct grammar, sentence structure, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Students will also have plenty of opportunities to share their work and ideas through class discussions, speeches, and presentations. In addition, students will be introduced to a variety of novels during the year.

I sincerely look forward to this school year and getting to know each of you and your student. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to help this 8th grade class prepare for high school. Please feel free to call, e-mail or stop by to see me.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Roberts
